These healthy gluten-free freezer meals are meals that will stand up well to freezing, and you’ll look forward to pulling them out of the freezer to eat!
When I went on my self-declared maternity leave, I fell in love with freezer meals. As someone who hates mushy food, I set out to make freezer meals I’d actually want to eat. So, I stocked my pantry with over 25 meals (see 12 healthy freezer meals for new moms) and since then have tested a ton more recipes in the freezer. (Also check out what I made for my second maternity leave: 12 healthy summer freezer meals here!)
Many of the recipes below are specific freezer recipes with complete freezer instructions for optimal results. Some of the other recipes have freezer instructions in the post.
And others are kind of obvious, like freezing banana bread (wrap in saran wrap and freeze, then defrost and eat.) That being said, if you have questions on these or any other HH recipe you want to freeze, just ask!
I’m happy to help!
Here are a few tips for freezer meal success:
Typically the best advice is to reheat the same way you cooked them for the best texture results. Of course, you can always microwave, but you risk making the food mushy. Another option is the toaster to reheat waffles, etc. The exception is instant pot meals or slow cooker meals, you’ll have to reheat those on the stove.
Some foods can be frozen cooked or uncooked. I’ve read the safest way is to freeze cooked foods, then reheat after defrosting. However, I like to freeze certain things like meatloaf uncooked, defrost, and cook as usual. It’s a personal preference thing. Also, keep in mind…
Do not thaw frozen food and then freeze it again without cooking it first. This particularly applies to meat/seafood/etc. So, if you have frozen ground beef, don’t thaw it, form your meatloaf and then freeze it without cooking it. You’ll need to thoroughly cook the meatloaf and then freeze it after it’s cooled completely.
Unless noted, it’s best to defrost your food first. Do so under refrigeration for 24 hours, then cook it.
The ideal length of time cooked food can be stored in the freezer is up to 3 months. Keep in mind food in the freezer is always safe to eat (according to the FDA), however, it’s the texture that may degrade over time.
Always always always reheat food to 165F. Once it’s been cooked and cooled, all food needs to reheat to 165F.
Like I said, if you have any questions, let me know!
