A baby waffle recipe for babies and toddlers full of nutrients and can be frozen for an easy breakfast or snack! Perfect for baby-led weaning!
Hi, friends!
This week was supposed to be “baby” week on the blog. Unfortunately, it’s off to a kind of late start since it’s already Tuesday night, but that’s okay. That’s life right now—a little bit chaotic and a lot of love.
This week I wanted to share a few baby recipes I’ve been trying out for KK! I have a handful of baby and toddler recipes from when KJ was little, including my vegan cinnamon apple baby muffins, hummus for babies, and baby meatloaf tins. And most recently, I shared a review of the Beaba Babycook Neo with 5 Baby Food Combination ideas. But, this time around, I’ve ventured into more baby-led weaning territory earlier. We started to offer KK food items other than purees when he was 7.5 months old, and he has excelled with it, so each week, we do a little more self-feeding and a little fewer purees.
I was giving him some of KJ’s cinnamon flax oat flour waffles for breakfast, but I thought I could try to tweak my healthy sweet potato pancake recipe into a waffle for added nutrients. I was right, it came out perfect, and the baby loved it!
And then, something crazy happened.
My 3-year-old, who hasn’t eaten sweet potato in over two years, begged for a waffle and ate it PLAIN without any Justin’s chocolate hazelnut butter or syrup. He just ate it plain, just like that, in like five seconds. I know this picture looks staged, but I swear it is not. He ate that thing super fast and has asked for them every morning since.
So this is now our go-to waffle recipe! Lucky for me, it’s super easy to make, and I have a bunch stashed in the freezer, so even my husband can manage breakfast now for both boys. So I said what I said.
How to Make Baby Waffles
This recipe is SUPER easy to make! First, add all your ingredients to a blender or food processor and process until smooth. Then, pour your batter over hot waffle iron and cook for 5-7 minutes.
I have a Belgian Waffle Maker that makes four large square waffles. I cut the squares into four mini squares for the baby and two rectangles for my preschooler. If you have another size waffle maker, you may have to adjust the amount of batter you use in your waffle maker. One-fourth of the batter should make one large waffle, about the size of your hand. Please let us know in the comments if you try this recipe with another size/shape waffle maker. I’m sure others would love to know!
Swaps and Substitutions:
Quick oats- sub rolled oats is fine, but I would add them to the food processor first and quickly pulse them ten times before moving on with the recipe.
Baking powder – do not omit
Cinnamon – can adjust or omit, but it’s great for babies to get used to seasonings in food.
Eggs – I haven’t tried this recipe with flax eggs, but I think they would work!
Almond butter – feel free to sub peanut butter, cashew butter, or almond butter. You can use sunflower seed butter, but it will react with baking powder and turn the waffle green, not harmful, just green. Alternatively, you could use butter, a butter substitute, or coconut oil.
Vanilla Almond Milk – sub any other milk (dairy or non-dairy) or water
Sweet potato – sub canned pumpkin (although you may want to blot dry), banana, butternut squash, or even a baby food packet! If it’s too liquidity, though, it could impact how well the waffles crisp up.
How to Store & Freeze these Baby Waffles
Once your waffles are finished cooking, let them cool on a cooling rack. Then, transfer waffles to a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. After that, we like to reheat in the microwave for 30-60 seconds and then pop them in the toaster oven to crisp them up again.

I tried the recipe as per the description. Super delicious. I mean crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the outside. Very filling and healthy. A staple addition to my pancakes/ waffles recipe. I was wondering for fluffier pancakes, can add apple cider to the batter?
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
You totally could! This recipe is based on my healthy sweet potato pancakes recipe: https://hungryhobby.net/healthy-sweet-potato-pancakes/
