A go-to easy to make in the blender healthy waffle recipe that’s delicious, light, fluffy, crisp, and freezer friendly!
I’ve been making these waffles on repeat! They are SO easy to whip up in the blender, and the first batch is ready in under 15 minutes! My kids gobble them up (for every meal if they could, but we limit them to breakfast. ) Plus, they are full of nutritious ingredients and without any refined flour or sugar! Yes, there are bananas. But no, there is no overwhelming banana taste. In fact, since only one banana is used in almost 2 cups of dry ingredients, you can’t taste it at all. It adds sweetness without the banana flavor since I know some of you object to banana-flavored foods, as does my oldest son, who approved of these waffles.
My kids got used to having store-bought waffles when we went on vacation. But those suckers, at least the healthy ones, are expensive. $4.99 for like six waffles. Hard pass. So, I wanted a recipe that tasted like “store-bought” waffles, aka crisp, light, and fluffy, with a classic store-bought “waffle” taste. My oat flour waffle that I’ve made every week for KJ for two years was falling out of favor (and the baby never liked that recipe, haha he would eat a few bites here and there, but usually he would spit it out), so I decided to do a mix of oats and whole wheat flour in the blender. This way, they would stay light but also be nutritious. Lucky for me, they were a huge hit!
In the middle of shooting this recipe, my Belgian waffle maker died. So I was faced with a choice of what to replace it with. I replaced it with
this waffle maker that makes smaller square waffles. That turned out to be an amazing blessing! It’s been way more manageable portion sizes for the kids, so there is less waste. Mr. Hungry and I even like the portion size a bit better! So long Belgian waffles, for now, at least!
And remember! Protein is still important for a healthy breakfast! I drink collagen in my coffee with a more carby breakfast, but you could also serve it with a side of eggs or sausage!
How to Make Healthy Waffles
This is an easy blender waffle recipe! You can blend all the ingredients and then pour them directly into your waffle maker!
Swaps & Substitutions
Eggs – I have not tried using flax eggs or egg substitutes in this recipe, but I’m sure it would work just fine. The waffles may not be as light and airy, but they will still be crispy and taste delicious.
Rolled Oats – You could substitute quick oats if needed. Or, if you are really in a pinch and only have instant oats, that may work, but you probably need less than a cup to make an equal equivalent. Do not omit.
Whole wheat flour – do not omit. If you need a gluten-free or wheat-free waffle recipe, try my cinnamon flax oat flour waffles, they are delicious! I made them every week for a year or two! They are a bit denser but still crisp and delicious!
Milk – you can use any dairy or nondairy milk. I tested these with whole milk, ripple original milk, and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. They were all delicious!
Baking powder – do not omit.
Coconut oil – palm oil, butter, canola oil, avocado oil, or even olive oil could substitute here. (Olive oil might have a strong taste though.) Please don’t use vegetable oil. See more about healthy cooking oils here!
Vanilla extract – for flavor!
Banana – the riper, the sweeter! You could sub 1/2 to 1 cup mashed sweet potato or applesauce in a pinch.
How to Store Healthy Waffles
Store in an air-tight container for up to five days in the refrigerator. Reheat in the toaster or toaster oven.
How to Freeze Healthy Waffles
We freeze these in freezer bags for up to 3 months (although they never last that long.) Then, when we want one, we defrost in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, then pop them in the toaster. Easy peasy!

This recipe sounds and looks great. gona make soon as my family loves waffles. Is the banana necessary? or what could I sub. in it’s place?
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
The banana is only there for sweetness, you could really skip it!

hi again I wanted to ask is that just melted peanut butter or some kind of peanut butter sauce? Thanks, for sharing the recipe.
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
Its a peanut butter sauce! I was going to post it next week but it’s 2 tbsp pb, 2tbsp melted butter, and 1tbsp maple syrup. It’s divine!
Caroyn Z says
That PB sauce sounds delicious!

I absolutely loathe the taste of whole wheat anything. Could this be made with plain white flour?
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
I totally get that! yes, you could do plain white flour or try my oat flour waffles! Oat flour is still whole grain but tastes like oatmeal. You may like it better than whole wheat flour, but it will be a little denser.
Barbara Calhoun says
Thank you. ANYTHING would be better than whole wheat flouir. I’ll try all purpose flour first.
Thanks again for the great recipe.

That’s how I feel about whole wheat pasta! Thumbs down ha ha

It really irks me that people rate a recipe before trying it. I should have read the reviews before I made these waffles rather than trusting the 5.0 reviews.
I made these exactly as instructed and they were not good: bland, dense, not crispy. I couldn’t even finish my waffle it was that bad. What a waste of ingredients.
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
Oh man I’m sorry to hear they didn’t work out for you. I literally make huge batches of these every week, we love them!
Gianna says
Great taste!

I made a few of these. Some with almonds some with blue berries. They were amazing. Very light and fluffy but still crispy. Literally perfect. I also put a teaspoon of flaxseed meal in the mix. 5 stars from me!
