Healthy Thanksgiving Sides, recipes by registered dietitian Kelli Shallal that go big on flavor and produce for your holiday!
Hello, friends! Today, I’m popping in to update this old post with all my Thanksgiving side dish recipes from the last 10 years! I added some more recent recipes, like my three-cheese twice-baked butternut squash, and updated some photos on old recipes.
Quick Tip: How to Lighten Up Your Thanksgiving Menu Without Being Excommunicated From The Family
All of these healthy Thanksgiving side dish recipes were developed over years of hosting Thanksgiving at my own house. I know that Thanksgiving or holidays, in general, are a time when people are VERY resistant to change, and that’s okay! It’s a holiday, it’s one day of the year. Everybody has that “special” recipe they look forward to and would jump down your throat if you didn’t provide it on said holiday. And I don’t think you should get rid of those special recipes. What you can do is try one new thing and keep everything else traditional. Or if you are going to a potluck, you can bring something more unique.
Some of these recipes are a little bit lighter versions of good things, like my sweet potato casserole that’s been a huge hit in my family for years. And some of them, just up the amount of veggies or whole grains you would typically get, like in my gluten-free cornbread stuffing. Or in my delicata squash tian, that’s a fun root vegetable take on a dish typically made with potatoes, and it’s a show-stopping beauty, as is my new three cheese twice-baked butternut squash. In my recipes, I try to make small swaps that improve the nutrition without sacrificing flavor. Flavor is what brings us together on a holiday; it’s what creates memories. Food is all about memories, so don’t sacrifice it in the name of health. Small swaps and additions make a big difference!
