Dark Chocolate Puppy Chow Pecans is a delicious vegan and paleo (aka gluten free and dairy free) version of traditional puppy chow. It makes the perfect gift in little jars or for you to hoard like we are doing, whatever you chose!
I blame my friend Theresa for these delicious little morsels. She was the one that first turned me on to them three years ago, and now I make them every year. Side note, she makes hers with stevia chips and peanut butter, that is also delicious, but I decided to keep it simple.
I mean, there is something about covering any kind of nut in dark chocolate or any chocolate, it’s just good. All the buttery fatty sweetness melts together to make one delicious treat.
Technically, a healthier treat since nuts are good for you and dark chocolate is good for you, so it’s a nutrition win for sure. The powdered sugar is the fun part, not as good for you, but oh does it taste so good!
Calories still count for something, so I wouldn’t suggest eating the whole bag just because it’s a healthy treat. It’s still a treat, but a tiny handful will make you super happy!
Speaking of that, seems like from the survey (have you taken it yet? If not, make sure you head over now and tell me what you want to see on Hungry Hobby in 2017, I’m bribing a giveaway of a $25.00 amazon gift card so go now, we will wait)……… okay, back?
According to the survey so far, you guys are interested in intuitive eating, well that’s good because I am too, so looks like we are a good fit for each other. A lot of people think that intuitive eating means throwing calories to the wind and watching them float away like peaceful feathers.
If only, but, not exactly, when eating intuitively you can still consider the potential calorie impact of a food. ie nuts are a healthy but a high-calorie food, dark chocolate is a healthy but again a high-calorie food, powdered sugar is just sugar.
So this is a healthier treat with a larger calorie impact than say, a piece of broccoli. So when having a treat, it’s best to really acknowledge you are having the treat. Mindful eating is about acknowledging and enjoying your food.
The funny thing is, when you do that, consciously pay attention to the flavors and taste then 5-6 of these bad boys are just as satisfying as two handfuls shoved in your mouth at once. Kapeesh?
So, if you follow me on snapchat (hungryhobbyrd) you know that I was the victim of a scam, only jokes on them because I didn’t buy their stupid car windshield repair service. Yesterday, after my 3-mile lunchtime run, I ran out to get an iced coffee.
About 3-4 minutes after I got home I was heating up my orange chicken stir-fry (recipe coming soon!), the doorbell rang, which I ignored. I get Amazon, FedEx, and other deliveries thanks to blogging and prime as if this were a delivery hub, they’ve usually dropped the package and driven away before I can open the door anyway. But, it rang again. T
hat’s when I knew someone knew I was home. I have an 80lb ridgeback with a deep scary bark, do you think she would let a few of those out for me? Hell no, she just wants to lick them to death. Lawrdy.
I opened the door, thank god we have a security screen and thank god the security screen was locked. Two men proceeded to ask me if I knew my car windshield was damaged. Let me just stop right there and say, why the hell would you ask me if I knew it was damaged?
Is that because you had just got done damaging it so there is no way I would have known? In fact, I knew that it wasn’t damaged. How would I know this? A) I just drove it to Starbucks 5 minutes ago. B)It’s a new car (not new but new to us). 3) Our cars barely fit in the garage, Mr. Hungry has to get right up next to my passenger windshield to get into his car so he would have noticed it because nothing gets past him.
I knew immediately they had damaged it, but I wasn’t about to unlock that security lock and get into it with them. They were pushy, asking about my insurance and were very surprised when I told them I was not interested in their services.
A) we have a no soliciting sign on our door B) I knew they had damaged it so I wasn’t about to get into with them. C) I was doing everything I could to stay calm and not open the door for fear of rape or murder.
Although, maybe Nala could have licked them to death if things went south. Once they had gone, I called Mr. Hungry, went outside while on the phone with him and sure enough, they had put a small crack in the passenger side that managed to spread almost a foot across the windshield.
Almost as they had, I don’t know, an ice pick or Phillips screwdriver? Tell me I wouldn’t have noticed that while I waited 10 freaking minutes in the line at Starbucks. Slowest line ever.
I called the cops, who I knew wouldn’t/couldn’t do anything, but it made me feel better they knew that I knew what they did. It’s okay because I believe in Karma, and I know Karma is coming for their shady lying pathetic selves. At least I have these Pecan Puppy Chow or Puppy Chow Pecans, whatever, it’s delicious and makes me forget about those jerks.
Pecan Puppy Chow
Ingredients
- 1.65- ounce dark chocolate I used Trader Joe's
- 12 ounces raw pecans
- 1 cup powdered sugar will not use it all - note for Paleo powdered sugar use this recipe to make your own grain-free powdered sugar.
- 2 tablespoons milk dairy or non-dairy
Instructions
- Melt dark chocolate in microwave with 2 tablespoons milk. I broke one dark chocolate bar into pieces and then added 2 tablespoon milk in a small bowl. I set the microwave to 50% power and microwaved for 20-30 seconds. Once the chocolate was hot enough I stirred it until it melted all the way.
- Pour the melted chocolate over the pecans and coat them well.
- Add powdered mixture to bowl in spoonfuls mixing pecans. The ones that got coated I removed right away. PS I've tried the bag method (dumping it into a zip lock bag), but it seems the chocolate just absorbs the powdered sugar. The stirring method gives you more control.
- Let harden by laying flat on parchment paper on a pan in the fridge for 2-4 hours. Then they are ready! Happy finger licking, chocolate popping fun!
Don’t forget it, pin it for later!
