Super-seed Morning Glory Muffins are slightly sweet, moist, very nutty and filling! They also promote hormone balance for ladies when used for seed cycling!
Happy MLK day friends! Of course, it’s still a work day for me but it’s nice to have Mr. Hungry home an extra day to hang out with. We had a fun weekend though which I’m planning to share soon!
I just wanted to make sure I shared these muffins with you in case you have the day off and have the urge to bake! Now here is the deal with these muffins.
These muffins are based very closely on my hemp and flax seed muffins, a recipe originally created for seed cycling. In case you are new to HH and haven’t heard of seed cycling, it’s a natural way to promote hormone balance (read about seed cycling here).
It helped me finally recover from 5 years of post-pill amenorrhea. It can also help with other hormone imbalance conditions including PCOS, endometriosis, and PMS. The goal is to get 2 tablespoons of ground flax and 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds in per day in the first half of your cycle. I was eating these energy bites for about 3 months in a row before I finally got sick of them, so I decided to make muffins!
I figure about 1.5 muffins gets in enough seeds so that will be my breakfast for this week (probably with coffee and collagen.) Keep in mind these muffins are HEARTY and seedy.
They aren’t your typical light fluffy muffin, they are packed with healthy fats and seeds instead of refined flour. The taste and texture are wonderful in these muffins in their own way, nutty with a little bit of sweet crunch from the yummy add-ins.
The original version of these muffins without the add-ins is still really good too, but more nutty than sweet, so I often ate those ones with jelly. These don’t need anything added, they are perfect the way they are! Although we (my MIL and I) thought they were much better warm then cold.
One of the most common questions I get is will seed cycling help if I’m on birth control? My answer is maybe, but probably not. The effects of birth control are stronger than the effects of food would be, that’s why it’s effective at preventing pregnancy.
However, there is no harm in trying it because the worst that happens is you get a huge dose of healthy anti-inflammatory omega 3 fats daily. Definitely nothing wrong with that!
Now on the other hand, if you feel like the birth control pill isn’t working for you (weight gain, mood, etc) or if you are planning to transition off of it to get pregnant, that’s another story.
I put my clients on a post-pill recovery plan to help restore production of natural hormones by providing the right nutrition support determined through an in-depth nutrition assessment. Seed cycling is usually a part of that protocol but not always. Hope that helps!

I love the idea of a heartier muffin for breakfast. I love muffins, but often times they aren’t filling enough on their own.
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
I definitely agree!

I love muffins! Quick question about these…
I’ve never had these seeds. How are they when you chew on these muffins? Are they crunchy with a nice crunch – like a nut? Or are they more of a condensed hard crunch like a poppy seed? Sorry if that’s a dopey question, I just really have no idea. Thank you for the post!
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
Ha ha that’s a great question! hemp seeds are pretty unique because they are so small – almost the consistency of cooked steel cut oats or quinoa. The flax is ground so no crunch at all, but you can taste the grittiness of it just a little bit – almost like oat bran or wheat bran! The add-ins like the carrots, raisins, and coconut do a nice job of covering that up though. Unfortunately, flax is the best seed for hormone balance so that’s why there is so much of it in these muffins. Let me know if you end up trying them!

This recipe is a go-to food. Thanks for sharing! I was wondering what is the shelf-life of this muffin?
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
So glad you love them! I’ve had them last over a week or even two in the fridge, but your standard answer is “up to a week.” On the counter up to three days. Also may be good to freeze them for up to 3 months.
