Hi friends!
I hope y’all had a wonderful three-day weekend! Sorry for the break-in Friday Favorites. Things have been crazy crazy around the Shallal household recently. I’ll fill you all in when I can, but what I can tell you is we went up north last weekend. KJ climbed the scattered mountains of snow that hadn’t quite melted yet. He fed bunnies, chipmunks, and squirrels in the backyard. And we took a second to hang out and relax. We hit up our favorite Flagstaff restaurant one night, and my uncle made homemade stew another night. It was lovely. I’m so glad we got to go up there one more time this winter. And the ride in the new truck was so pleasant, Nala got to sit in the cab with us instead of sliding all over the back hatch of our SUV.
The only bad thing was I started to get this burning in my leg, which I thought was related to my usual back pain that comes and goes. It turns out no, I have shingles. (Which by the way, I can’t figure out if I should be embarrassed about it or not haha I guess I’ve decided no since I’m telling the internet. ) When the urgent care doctor told me, it was like he was speaking a foreign language. My first thought was, wait, I’m not over 50. But then I remembered my very close friend had recently had shingles and she is my age. So after several calls to the pediatrician to ensure the antiviral and anti-inflammatory medicine prescribed was safe, I began a course of antivirals. I then seemed to get sicker before getting better – headache and chills for 48 hours straight. So now I’m left with a healing rash and random nerve pain on my right side that’s pretty uncomfortable. I’d say the whole experience was worse than my experience giving birth unmedicated if that puts it in perspective for you. If you are over 50, I highly recommend the shingles vaccine. If you are under 50, I highly recommend taking the best care of yourself possible to prevent your dormant chickenpox virus from going rogue. It’s no fun.
So that’s life lately! Now, I’m headed out to finally get a pedicure and manicure since it’s been two months and clearly, I’m in need of a little TLC. Have a wonderful weekend friends!
WTE? Meal Plan
This week’s meal plan is a good one! It should be in your inbox now for subscribers!
Favorites
A couple of weeks ago, Mr. Hungry’s family visited from Michigan, and his uncle made us a traditional middle eastern feast! We all enjoyed the treat, but I think KK won for the person that enjoyed it most. He was stealing the spoon out of my mouth practically!
Milkademia
I was on the hunt for a dairy-free substitute butter that doesn’t contain cashews (my nephew is allergic, and I don’t want to risk having it around), I found this, and I like it better than what I was using (Mikyokos). KJ likes it better than real butter, and KK doesn’t know the difference but likes it. I still prefer real butter over substitutes, but KK can’t tolerate dairy, so we will go with this!
Hungryroot
So we had an intentional Hungryroot order this month and an unintentional one (IE, I forgot to reschedule the delivery). But, I was so glad I forgot because even though they didn’t send exactly what I would have picked if I had picked out the recipes myself, they sent us enough that I could modify meals and have enough groceries to feed everyone. So it was a win!
One of the new meals we tried this month was their shrimp boil packets. They were delicious!
For those of you who haven’t heard of Hungryroot, you can check out my full review here with a discount code!
Thrive Market
Me: I’m not going to buy any more snacks for KJ. He needs to eat fruits and veggies.
Also Me:
So that was our latest Thrive Market order! haha Lots of snacks for all.
Air Fried Cod
We finally tried air-fried cod! I had to go rogue and make my recipe because most of the recipes I found contained parmesan, and we are dairy-free for KJ. I added a bunch of bay seasoning, and it turned out delicious. Let me know if you want me to share the recipe! PS still love this air fryer insert as well!
Daily Harvest
I am loving the new bowl flavors from Daily Harvest. The harvest bowls have always been and will always be my favorite offering from DH.
Fitness
Fitness has been going well – until I got shingles, then I haven’t been working at all. The way I understand it, I was susceptible to shingles because my body is so stressed out my immune system is down. So, I’m shifting to self-care, taking baths – both for stress relief and for the rash. Reading. Breathing. Drinking more water. Eating more greens. All the things. Right now, exercise is more inflammatory than anti-inflammatory. I’ll probably start with some light walking this weekend, though.
