Alright, friends, this post has been a long time coming. I spent almost a whole year trying and reviewing meal kit delivery services so, that ultimately I could finally put this list together for you!
I didn’t try every single meal kit delivery service out there, but I did try a decent amount, and today I want to share with you which ones have the Kelli stamp of approval! So, let’s dive in!
With each service, we (my husband and I) considered five factors before ranking it:
- Taste – this is at the top because I don’t care how healthy it is. If it doesn’t taste good, you aren’t going to eat it.
- Ingredients – was organic offered? What was the quality of the protein items?
- Efficiency – were the instructions easy to follow and simple to complete?
- Portion size – were the portion sizes appropriate for weight loss? Were they appropriate if you weren’t trying to lose weight (both male and female?)
- Nutrition – was the meal (or at least some of the meals offered) well balanced with protein, healthy carbs, healthy fats, and many veggies in each meal?
Also, please note, I know that some of my readers feel like product reviews are annoying, and others love them (I know because you tell me in my yearly surveys.) I started doing these reviews because so many people emailed me, DMed me, asked me point blank which one I recommended, and I had zero answers for it.
Keep in mind. I pay for the meal kits myself, cook the food, take the photos (including the box, packaging, and food), edit the photos, and write up this post, which by the time we are all said and done takes 7-10 hours. So, yes, I sign up as an affiliate for products I’ve tried and would recommend because it helps compensate me for the time spent doing the review for free. (I never sign up as an affiliate until AFTER I’ve tried a product, never ever.) I hope that helps you understand the purpose of these review posts a bit more, but hey, you can always skip this one if you aren’t interested!
1. Blue Apron – Best Taste
Out of all the meal kit delivery services, I tried Blue Apron comes in at the top for everything we rated it on, but especially for taste, efficiency, portion size, and nutrition.
While some of the downsides of this meal kit delivery service were a lack of specialized diet options and limited organic/high-quality meat options, the service more than makes up for these issues in terms of quality, taste, and easy to follow instructions. These globally-inspired meal kits are my absolute favorite I’ve tried anywhere. And it is my go-to service for weekday eating, date-night, and entertaining. Both the weight watchers meals and the regular meals had decent portion sizes, which was a huge bonus.

2. Green Chef – Best Ingredients
This service also exclusively focuses on healthy meals and high-quality organic ingredients. They even offer 100% grass-fed meat (usually for an upgrade.) We tried three meals from them, and we loved each meal that we tried. The nutrition of the meals was generally well balanced, and they did have many specialized dietary options to chose from, but you can’t pick and choose from multiple dietary patterns. So you can’t choose off of the paleo and the keto and the vegetarian menu at the same time. The biggest downside to this meal kit delivery service was the smaller portion sizes. Overall though, the meals were tasty, and of course, as a real food Dietitian, I appreciate the high-quality ingredients.

I feel like I can’t leave this section without sharing. I also did a review on Sun Basket, which is Green Chef’s main competitor. Overall I felt like Green Chef comes in ahead, but you can read my full Green Chef review and full SunBasket review here.
3. Daily Harvest – Best Plant-Based Meal Kit Delivery Service
Daily Harvest is a plant-based frozen meal delivery service, not necessarily a meal kit, but still worth including. Daily Harvest has several offerings, including lattes, chia bowls, smoothies, flatbreads, harvest bowls, and more. My personal favorite is the harvest bowls because they are packed with flavor, and it’s easy for me to add eggs to for some additional protein. While this isn’t exactly a “meal kit” more like a frozen foods option, I thought it was worth mentioning as one of my favorite (easily adaptable for the flexitarian) plant-based options.

4. Smoothiebox – Best Smoothie Delivery Service
Again, Smoothiebox is not your traditional “meal kit” delivery service. Instead, it’s a smoothie kit delivery service. I prefer their smoothies to other companies for many reasons, starting with they taste better. Also, they have a balanced amount of protein, fat, fiber, and carbs. Many smoothie kits have an overload of fruit and sugar that I wouldn’t exactly count as a healthy breakfast. I appreciate smoothie box keeps the sugar in check in their smoothies while still keeping them great tasting.

5. EveryPlate – Best Budget-Friendly Service
I’m including EveryPlate when other bloggers and Dietitians probably wouldn’t. It’s a budget meal kit service, so the emphasis is on budget family-friendly meals and not exactly on nutrition. But I want to make a case that cooking at home is always healthier than eating out, and if you know what you are looking for, you can make smart, healthy choices with this service. I was really impressed when we tried it, and I really think with just a few simple tweaks or a couple of extra salad kits in the fridge, you could make this one work if you are on a tight budget. For example, in the meal above, I added some steam in the bag broccoli for extra veggies. I think the meal was great, healthy, and low-cost!

Other Kit Options
I’ve also reviewed:
This service is more down-home type meals, and I would make the same recommendations for it as I did Every Plate. You have to know what to chose and be willing to add veggies to the meal on your own. Other than that, it’s great for big families! Click here to read the full review!
As mentioned above, Sun Basket is a health-focused meal kit delivery service. We didn’t enjoy the meals quite as much as Green Chef, and the inconsistent delivery dates drove me bonkers. However, the portion sizes were bigger with Sun Basket, and I know many people love this one; it just wasn’t for us. But, you can click here to read the full review!
That’s it!
Is there any I missed? I know I’m still getting requests to review Hello Fresh, and I’m working on it. Probably will get to that one in the next few months. If you have any others you’d like me to review, just leave a comment here, and I’ll put it on my list!
Are there any healthier meal kits that you love? Have you tried any of the ones listed? My opinion is great and all (ha ha), but the collective review is even better, right?!?! So please share!
