Hi Friends, Happy Friday!
Man my post have been sporadic this week haven’t they? I have been prioritizing studying for the RD exam so much I just haven’t been able to do hardly anything but that. Thanks to everyone hanging in there and still reading, I have to say it will probably be sporadic like this for the next month or so. I am going to make my goal three post a week, but whatever I can fit in I’ll do. As you know already, blogging myself and reading blogs are one of my premo favorite things to do so I’ll be at it as much as possible!
Joining a Run Club
Anyways, let’s back track. On Wednesday I joined a run club at my local gym. I know that I am a slow runner, lets face it I am a total newbie when it comes to running. So I was pretty nervous about going. I emailed the run coordinator and told her a little about myself, my current pace and training goals. She was so nice and definitely encouraged me to come! There were two groups running one for 6 miles and the other for 4.5 miles. Since I had 4 miles on my schedule I decided to run with the 4 mile group. I noticed a couple things: 1) talking to someone while running totally beats running by yourself 2) being with other people takes the focus off myself and allowed me to actually run faster.
1mi- 11:08
2mi- 10:07
3mi- 10:12
4mi- 10:16
Total 4.53 miles in 47:08
My overall conclusion, while I was okay with the time, and loved the experience, I am not sure that running outside for a shorter run was worth the extra wear and tear on my hip.
Another “Failed” Long Run
This morning I woke up and googled “running while sick” and read a short article on runners world that basically said as long as your symptoms are above the neck then go for it. So I grabbed a greek yogurt and a sudafed 12 hour before getting dressed and stretching.
At around 5:30 am I headed out the door. Not going to lie before the sudafed kicked in I kind of felt like death. I had the hot sweaty feeling induced by being sick going on, which in my opinion is so different from the good sweaty feeling you get from working out hard. At that point, I was wondering how far I was going to be able to make it. Around the third mile the medicine kicked in and I was doing good. Then, about five minutes later my hip started to give me trouble again. Last week I left the house feeling tight in the hips and sore, so while the pain irritated me I knew I needed to rest it. This week however, I felt good (minus the cold) leaving the house. So, I started to panic a little thinking my hip may be the end of my training. Then it dawned on me, this has happened before and the solution has been NEW FREAKING SHOES. My shoes are 10 months old and I’m training for a half marathon, that is no bueno. With that thought in mind I cut my run short because I couldn’t take the pain anymore, vowed to do 9 miles next week and decided to head to finish line as soon as they open.
1mi- 12:34
2mi- 11:48
3mi- 11:23
4mi- 10:54
5mi- 10:10
6mi- 11:25
7mi- 12:47 –> had to stop and walk
When I got home I made friends with the foam roller and made a protein shake with 4 oz iced coffee, 6 oz unsweetened vanilla almond milk and a scoop of chocolate protein powder.
Now, I am off too finish getting ready, enjoying a giant bowl of puffins with berries, and finish line to get new shoes and running gear! Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!
