Hi Friends! How was your weekend??? It felt kind of short after the midweek holiday didn’t it? (You can see my 30th birthday and Fourth of July recap here.)
Friday night, after I got a swim in I came home to pizza and a movie. Saturday was a working day, I spent the day working on the blog and photographing recipes! And let’s just say Sunday involved a new donut place called Donut Parlor, ermygawd, if you live in AZ you have to try it!
So today I’m popping in to share a roundup of some of our recent mini home remodeling and decorating projects! It’s been almost a year since we’ve moved into this house all I’ve shown you guys is the gym.
Let me just say that Mr. Hungry and I are NOT handy. So anything we do ourselves around the house is a big deal (to us). And when it comes to decorating, I’m okay at it but it takes me FOREVER to find the right pieces. Like I have to be IN LOVE with it to buy it.
Repainting Bathroom Cabinets
Our bathroom cabinets in both bathrooms were the original oak color that came installed in the house in the 80’s. Mr. Hungry did a ton of research and decided to paint them using a gel stain, followed by a top coat. Here is what they looked like before:
Mr. Hungry also added some beautiful handles to it! He did the same thing on the smaller vanity in our bathroom. I think they look like brand new cabinets! The only downside is that the gel stain isn’t super easy to wipe clean. Other than that they look beautiful!
Kitchen Table
So we bought our kitchen table from the people who owned the house before us. They sold us our couch, kitchen table, and outdoor furniture at a really great price so they didn’t have to move those big heavy pieces.
But, after I got the built-in cabinets installed (by Lowe’s in Chandler) in the dining room the table didn’t match the space anymore.
So my aunt offered to paint it for us, which was seriously the best present ever! She used chalk paint which I had never heard of before. To use chalk paint you don’t have to do any sanding or anything, you can just paint right on the furniture.
She did do a quick light sand by hand with sandpaper for the top of the table but everywhere else she just painted directly on the furniture. We did a couple of clear top coats on the top of the table since it will be “heavily used.”
Then we had to wait 7 days to set anything on top of it because chalk paint is plaster based and it can dent if you set something on it sooner than it is fully dried.
She also was nice enough to reupholster the chairs and add a runner. She got the fabric at SAS fabric (a discount fabric store I’ve been going to since I can remember with my aunt, grandma, and mom they LOVE it… I’m overwhelmed by it, but to be fair I’m overwhelmed at the regular fabric store lol) and she sent me 3 options to chose from. I love how it turned out, it feels so customized! Then the other day she gifted me this beautiful centerpiece that belonged to my Grandma.
Do you spy the blogging equipment in the background? I take my photos at the end of this table. All my background boards stay there permanently unless we have a really really special occasion. Then I will move them to my office or the garage.
The cabinets we had built in were designed with my blogging stuff in mind. I’ve literally never been so organized when it comes to blogging props/equipment.
Guest Bedroom
We finally got some decorations for the guest bedroom which was literally just a bed before.
Believe it or not, we got most of the decorations at Big Lots, I love how much they brighten up the room! The light isn’t great in that picture but I love this farmhouse style artwork hanging above my antique dresser which has been the family for generations!
I love this little vintage clock the most! However, it makes a loud ticking noise so I need to remember to let my guests know they can move it out at night.
The last little wall art piece we got, was this metal flower art. Which is hanging next to the window.
To Do List
I actually got distracted while finishing up this post and ordered a bunch of stuff on Amazon to make a dent on the list below!
- Add a curtain to the guest bedroom? What do you guys think? I think it would be the perfect finishing touch. Maybe a little runner rug along the foot of the bed as well?
- Finalized decorations and add photos to the built-in cabinets in the dining room.
- Add decorations to the coffee nook in the dining room (the corner of the dining room I haven’t shown yet!)
- Get a rug for my office. – Just ordered this one! If it looks good I’ll share my finally done office!
- Decorate the nursery. – We picked a theme! Safari! Here is my Pinterest board I’ve added things to for inspiration!
Let me know if you guys like this kind of post and want to see more in the future?!?! Or should I just stick to food? ha ha
Alright, that’s it for the day! I’d love to hear what mini (or big) home remodeling projects you have gotten yourself into recently! Be back tomorrow with a perfect summer (or any time) dip recipe!

The bathroom cabinets & table came out great! We just moved last week but in our previous home I had chalk painted the kitchen cabinets & bathroom and many many other pieces of furniture! It is so easy and hard to mess up! The outcome is always worth it! Love the built ins in your dining room.

I love how the cabinets in the bathroom turned out. WOW! I don’t mind the color of mine, but at some point I want different colors and not dark brown.

Gorgeous renovations!! The vanity and table both look perfect and really have a new life in them. I love your style! My husband and I have found great finds at Big Lots too. 🙂 We’re currently searching for our first home (we’ve been renting a town home for almost three years), and house hunting is so tough. Admittedly, I’ve wanted to find a home that doesn’t require much work, but your post has given me motivation and help to envision how simple changes could make all the difference.

I’m with you on finding a home that doesn’t require much work, however, after almost buying a house infested with scorpions I realized there were worse things! ha ha good luck on the search!

Is the chalk paint your aunt used on your dining table textured (i.e. does it feel like a chalkboard?) I love what you’ve done with the place! Very impressed with the talents you and your family have when it comes to remodeling/designing your space. My favorite thing you did so far is the color of the bathroom cabinets. Ours are currently the original oak color and I’m dying to change that — gathering ideas on how to make it happen myself.

No, it doesn’t feel like chalk. Very smooth, kind of plaster-like feeling?
