An elimination meal plan designed for breastfeeding mamas.
Description
An elimination meal plan designed for breastfeeding mamas.
I created this meal plan after having two boys with MSPI and counseling hundreds of women with babies with food allergies and intolerances. I know firsthand how stressful having a baby with food allergies or intolerances can be. I hope this meal plan helps ease some of the stress of being a new mom breastfeeding a baby with a food allergy or intolerance.
In general, most moms do not have to change their diet when breastfeeding. However, for a small subset of babies, they react to food mom has consumed through moms breastmilk. In these cases, an elimination diet may be helpful. This meal plan is designed for breastfeeding moms who suspect their baby has reactions such as MSPI or food allergy to foods mom is eating. While I don’t typically advise removing too many foods at once, sometimes the baby has such severe reactions or weight gain issues that a full elimination diet is warranted. Or maybe you prefer to follow the plan instead of removing one food at a time. Either way, please remember to use your pediatrician as a resource, as this plan is not meant to diagnose or cure any health conditions. Its purpose is for an educational resource only. Feel free to contact me about setting up an appointment if you need more individualized support.

Note – the entire meal plan is free of the top 9 major allergens. It does not guarantee an improvement in your baby’s symptoms. If you are going to see an improvement, typically, baby symptoms will improve within 48 hours, but the full effect may not be seen for two weeks. This is because, for some proteins, such as milk proteins, it takes two weeks for them to clear from your system.
What to do if your baby’s symptoms improve using this meal plan.
Begin reintroduction after symptoms have disappeared for two weeks. Reintroduce one thing at a time, waiting 3-7 days between each reintroduction period to ensure no reaction. Some babies have minor sensitivities and only react if you have the food every day, so when testing foods, consume it often. Look for physical signs (mucus, blood, etc., in the stools) as fussiness can often result from mental leaps, short naps, etc. That being said, remember, you know your baby best!
What to do if your baby’s symptoms do not improve using this meal plan.
You may want to try and keep on the plan but modify to remove chocolate, citrus, strawberries, and corn as these are also foods cited in the ABM Protocol for Allergic Proctocolitis. If you need help removing these foods, don’t hesitate to contact me for an appointment.
Good luck, Momma, you got this! There is no better Momma for that baby than you!
