Hi friends!
Look who is a big 5-month-old! I know you may end up being girlie or not – I had a more Tom Boy stage as a kid, but it is so fun to put you in ridiculous extra ruffles and bows right now. Girls are just so fun to dress; after dressing two boys, it feels like dressing a little doll. I honestly never saw myself as a girl mom, but I can’t help but soak it up now!
For Fun: KJ at 5 Months | KK at 5 Months
Anyways, let’s jump into life lately…
Sleeping
You are…. not really sleeping. You like to have a bottle before bed, and then you often drift off to sleep alone. But putting yourself back to sleep after waking up is not a skill you’ve mastered yet. After the initial four-month sleep regression, we found you slept much better in the pack-and-play at night. I don’t think you had enough room in the bassinet. When we initially moved you to the pack-and-play, you did a lot better and only woke up a couple of times a night. Nowadays, you seem to spend more time nursing and in our bed at night than sleeping in yours. You sleep better than your brothers did, but some days, Mommy is so tired at the end of the day that she goes to bed when you do. I know it’s probably about time to move you to your room, but I’m slower to want to end this young baby stage than I was with your brothers. It’s hard to tell if my emotions are due to you being a girl or the last baby, but either way, we moved your brothers together last weekend. I’m letting them adjust before you start officially sleeping in your room. The transition hasn’t been that smooth, so it’s better that you stay in our room till we work out the kinks and get into a routine. You’re still in your magic merlin suit, but I’ll probably go cold turkey and move to a regular sleep sack once we transfer you to your room.
As far as naps go, you nap 2-3 times a day. If you fall asleep on the go that’s not the best or longest nap, so you’ll end up with more naps that day. Your wake windows are about 2-3 hours now.
Nursing/Eating
We are still nursing every 2-3 hours or on demand, but most nursing sessions nowadays are under 10 minutes. We also started giving you some baby oatmeal. After your big travels with me to my conference in Denver, you got sick and stalled on weight gain. Since you are five months old, your pediatrician encouraged me to start with some oatmeal, so we did that! You mostly wear it instead of eating it, but I’m sure you’ll learn soon! I plan to do modified Baby Led Weaning like I did with KK with you, so I’m looking forward to that because it was so much fun with KK!
Development/Playing
You’re doing baby sit-ups and enjoying tummy time! I see you trying to army crawl and lifting your booty in the air. You have an easygoing temperament. You don’t mind being set down and will hang out just about anywhere – in the crib, bed, swing, bouncer. You’re happy as long as you’re not too tired AND can see someone. If one of us isn’t in your vision, you’re not happy. You love to grab Daddy and KJ’s hair. You think your brothers are the funniest thing in the world.
You’re mostly playing with hand-me-down Love Every toys and teethers right now. You never did take a pacifier, but you will chew on one if you’re hanging out in your swing. As your Mommy, I’m soaking in this stage where you are all gummy smiles and unable to run away when I set you down. I know it’s just a second. You’ll be eating real food, crawling everywhere, putting everything in your mouth, and trying to keep up with your brothers.
Family Life
Having three kids means you come with me more places than the boys did as babies. Nowadays, it’s often the boys with Daddy and you with me when we need to divide and conquer. I even took you with me (with Goga’s help) to Denver for my conference. You were less easygoing about that whole ordeal but also didn’t feel good thanks to catching your brother’s cold.
And I’ll never forget when we got home from Denver, your big brother KJ running right past me and Goga (Grandma) to you. The way you looked at him while he was making silly faces to make you laugh was pure love. My prayer is that the bond the two of you are setting now will carry on for your whole lives. KK has started to take on responsibilities with you, too. He loves to push your stroller and brings you toys when you cry. I always wanted two boys and a girl, but never in a million years thought I would get it. My best friend, growing up, had two older brothers who loved her to the end of the earth (yes, they sometimes fought, too.) So far, the way the boys spoil you and love you is everything I thought it would be. You are one lucky little girl, and so are we to have you!
