Date Caramel Sauce is made with only three all natural ingredients, no refined sugar or dairy products. A cleaner way to satisfy your cravings!
Confession time! When I was in high school before I could drive, I would tell my mom I had cheer practice every single morning, but I didn’t. I’d have her drop me off super early so I could meet my friends and walk down to Starbucks. Why did I lie?
Well because you had to cross a VERY busy street to get to this particular Starbucks which made my mom and grandma very nervous. It just so happens my mom and all her siblings went to the same high school I did (yes we had some of the same teachers so that was fun.) During their time in school on of their classmates passed away crossing that street, so I was not allowed to cross under ANY circumstances.
Not completely sure why I didn’t just have her take us to Starbucks, she probably would have done it. But, you know, teenagers think they are invincible. I’d give my right arm to feel like I had that kind of invincibility again. But, I digress.
My point of telling you this story is two-fold. One, to explain the severity of my obsession with caramel. We used to get venti caramel frappuccinos with extra extra caramel all around the cup and over the top of the whipped cream. It was basically a sugar bomb and by 9 am (at the latest) I was passed out over my desk.
The only thing I love more than caramel is frosting. In other words, I don’t like to beat around the bush just give me a sugar funnel directly into my mouth, thanks. There is no such thing as too sweet for me.
The second reason to tell you the story is to illustrate the point of backfiring deprivation. Tell someone (teenager or not) they can’t and they will want to do it more. Just like my stupid teenage self, lying to my mom and walking down to Starbucks across that damn busy street. Probably only because she told me I couldn’t.
Tell yourself you can’t have something, like caramel, chocolate, cake, cookies etc. is only going to make you want it 10x more. So what are you to do when you are trying to eat healthier? First, focus on what to put more of in your diet ie protein and produce.
Then, find cleaner ways to make your favorite foods.  Like this date caramel sauce! It’s made from three all natural ingredients, so it’s a fun little treat that satisfies my cravings.
I’m still mindful that this recipe is still mostly sugar, even if it is natural sugar so I do my best to not drink directly from the bottle. I said I do my best, I didn’t say I was making any promises!
PS this sauce totally drizzles just like it is supposed to, the key is to make sure you stir before your pour! Enjoy! Check back soon for a delicious healthy way to use this sauce!

I was between my high school defiance story and the story of you eating a cup of caramel … that was unforgettable.
Tara Fox says
so do you put the coconut milk in the fridge to separate the water from the cream and use that? or do you just use the whole can mixed together?
Kelli Shallal MPH RD says
I just shake the can and use the whole thing!
