This chipotle sauce for fish tacos is creamy, spicy, and so easy to make with just six ingredients! Drizzle or mix with coleslaw!
Hey, hey friends! I know it’s Saint Patrick’s Day, I’m behind on posting this recipe that was scheduled to come to you three days ago. Whomp whomp. I’ve got my corned beef in the crockpot, but you are getting this today! Because tomorrow it will be fish Friday, and you never know who might need this delicious chipotle sauce perfect for fish tacos!
This was my first time making fish tacos in the air fryer, but I was craving something spicy and creamy to finish them off. So I decided to whip up a less spicy version of my all-time favorite creamy chipotle sauce, which is more like a chipotle mayo than a sauce. Plus, that recipe is EXTRA spicy, and I didn’t want to hear Mr. Hungry complain about that… so a new version was born. It’s only six ingredients and ready in 3-5 minutes!
How to Make Chipotle Sauce for Fish Tacos
Gather your ingredients and process until smooth!
Avocado Mayo – avocado oil mayo is my preferred mayo because it’s jam-packed with healthy fats! You can sub any unflavored mayo you like, though.
Plain Yogurt – I added just a bit of plain yogurt, not Greek yogurt, regular yogurt. I don’t love using greek yogurt for cooking because it makes the food too greek yogurt tasting (read very tangy.) I made one version using real (aka cow’s milk) plain yogurt, which was delicious. I also made a dairy-free version using plain cashew yogurt. Both were delicious. You could omit this if you wanted, but it thins out the sauce and lightens the flavor to pair well with fish tacos.
Lime Juice – Don’t omit. Of course, you could sub lemon juice, but you will get a slightly different tasting end product.
Cilantro – do not sub with dried cilantro or omit. It’s so essential for the flavor!
Salt – adjust to taste.
Chipotle Pepper in Adobo Sauce – in most of my chipotle sauce recipes, I try to use half to an entire can of chipotle pepper in adobo sauce because I’m not too fond of leftovers, but that makes for a very spicy final product. You can adjust this recipe by adding more chipotle peppers or sauce. First, make the base recipe, then add until you hit our desired spiciness. Remember, you can always add more, but you can’t put it back once it’s blended in!
How to Serve Chipotle Sauce for Fish Tacos
I tested this recipe two ways on my fish tacos. The first way was drizzling over the fish before topping with coleslaw. Another method was mixing the coleslaw with the chipotle sauce and plopping on top of the fish in the tortilla. They were both equally delicious, but combining the sauce with the coleslaw was less messy when eating the tacos.
How to Store Chipotle Sauce for Fish Tacos
Storing: Store up to seven days in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Check the dates on your yogurt and mayo. If either of those goes bad before seven days, then that’s how long your sauce will be good.
Freezing: I do not recommend freezing this sauce.
